General Description:
Under the direction of nurses, hospital staff and physicians, care aides (also known as nurse aides, resident care aides and orderlies) assist in the basic care of residents. They are employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, group homes, home support and community care.
Care aides require physical stamina and strong interpersonal skills to carry out the regular duties associated with this occupation. Sensitivity and patience are also crucial qualities for creating a comfortable environment for patients.
Care aides have excellent observational skills. They should be able to adapt to constantly changing environments and carefully follow direction, policy and procedure. English fluency is also important. Care aides provide basic patient care.
Duties include:
- Taking basic measurements, temperature and pulse
- Performing basic personal care under the direction of a nurse
- Observation and monitoring patient status and reporting changes to supervisor
- Collection of specimens for sampling
- Provision of assistance in patients' activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and grooming and eating
- Moving physically challenged patients with specialized equipment
- Supervision of patients' exercise routines
- Maintenance of an inventory of supplies
- Performance of various maintenance tasks, such as assisting with set-up and maintenance of traction equipment, cleaning or sterilizing equipment, and maintaining and repairing equipment
