POST-SECONDARY APPLICATION PROCEDURE
GRADE 12 POST-SECONDARY HANDBOOK DOWNLOAD HERE!!
Virtually all public post-secondary institutions in BC receive their applications electronically through the website below - Education Planner BC. You can go on at any time to begin the process, as the website allows you to create an account and save your information as you go. Only when you're ready to apply do you submit and pay (some institutions will allow you to defer payment, but your application will not be processed until you have paid).
When you first go on the site, you'll be asked to pick a school. Choose one. (After your information is in the database, you can go back and choose additional schools if you want to.) Complete all the basic information required, which takes about 10 minutes. Then decide if you want to continue through to application and payment, or not. If you decide yes, you'll be linked to the post-secondary institution of your choice. You'll need your PEN (Personal Education Number, the 9-digit number on your GO card, locator card, or report card) and a credit card. Most payments will range from $35 to $100.
IMPORTANT: Once an institution has accepted you, your primary correspondence with them will be through email. You'll have your own account (e.g., mykwantlen.ca, youbc, etc.) which you must check regularly or you could miss deadlines that affect your future. Course selection will also occur online, not by going physically to the school.
After you've been accepted, and as it gets closer to registering for courses and paying, parents should be aware that the post-secondary institution will automatically charge for dental/medical coverage. If parents already have such coverage for their children, they need to fill out the opt out form in order not to be charged the extra fees.
